The Obesity Institute and Department of Population Health Sciences (DPHS) at Geisinger seek to recruit a dually-appointed health intervention scientist whose work focuses on transforming care to prevent and treat obesity through multidisciplinary and translational research. Appointment is at the rank of associate or full professor with responsibilities to advance research and service in obesity research and population health. The candidate must possess an earned doctorate (PhD or MD) in one of the following disciplines or a closely related field: behavioral health, health promotion, kinesiology, nutrition, population health, or health services research. The candidate must have proven experience and expertise as a health intervention researcher in one or more of the following areas: adult obesity interventions, mobile health tracking, telehealth, and/or psychometrics and research design as they relate to patient-centered outcomes and population health. Record of utilizing rigorous quantitative and qualitative methods and engaging diverse communities to develop, evaluate, and test interventions and policies designed to reduce health disparities, promote health, and improve care delivery to prevent and treat obesity is required. Experience with rural health disparities is desired. The successful candidate will be expected to develop or advance an independent externally funded research program; create and foster collaborative relationships with faculty and clinicians across Geisinger; and provide service to the health system, profession, and community. Applicants seeking appointment at the associate level must have at least 5 years of prior experience (at least 7 years for full professor) in a similar position in addition to a record of extramural grant funding as a Principal or Co-Investigator and strong record of publication of peer-reviewed collaborative research in obesity. The successful candidate will have a national and/or international reputation in obesity research.
Faculty in the Obesity Institute are expected to primarily contribute to the field of obesity science and translate research into practice to advance population health objectives at Geisinger. The Obesity Institute consists of faculty members with expertise in medicine/surgery, nutrition, pediatrics, and genomics. Faculty in Department of Population Health Sciences are expected to contribute to the research, educational, and service missions of the department and the broader Geisinger system. The DPHS consists of 15 faculty members with expertise in epidemiology, biostatistics, health services research, genomics, and health economics. Our research leverages the EMR resources at Geisinger that dates back to 1996 and claims data from our health plan.
Develops, maintains, and supervises a productive and nationally competitive research program; pursues independent funding for research and completes the goals and specific aims of externally funded projects.
Directs and supervises the day-to-day scientific work on research projects.
Provides oversight of staff and reviews and evaluates their work.
Provides technical and intellectual leadership for the research program including identification of the research question, formulation of the hypothesis, conducting the investigation, recording the observations, analyzing the data, drawing conclusions and preparing the completed work for publication.
Maintains national/international recognition through publications in high quality peer review journals, participation in peer review of grants and manuscripts, and presentations at other institutions, organizations, national and international meetings.
Leads mentoring committee activities for junior faculty, clinicians, postdocs, residents and fellows.
Provides a leading role in initiating collaborations with investigators, physicians and outside institutional lab groups; contributes professional and technical expertise in such collaborations.
Provides institutional service by participating in Departmental and System committees and meetings.
