Pharmacy Informatics Residency
Vanderbilt Health
Description Job Summary: This is a full-time, exempt term position lasting six months to one year. Vanderbilt University Medical Center Post-Graduate Year Two (PGY2) Pharmacy Informatics Residency program is a 12-month, full-time residency, accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). The purpose of the PGY2 Pharmacy Residency program is to build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available. The mission of the PGY2 Pharmacy Informatics residency is to transition PGY1 residency graduates from general practice to specialized informatics practice that meets the needs for informatics services and ultimately our patients and providers. The resident will be involved with active inpatient and outpatient services which includes multiple levels of system build and informatics clinical decision support. Graduates are well equipped to be fully integrated members of the informatics team, and able to contribute or make recommendations in a fast-paced environment. In addition, graduates are experienced in short-term research in pharmacy informatics, excel in their ability to teach other health professionals, and possess the experience necessary to exercise leadership for pharmacy informatics practice in the health system. Our residency program will provide each resident with specific learning experiences designed to enable the resident to expand the scope of his/her practice skills. The resident will be evaluated on ASHP goals/objectives as assigned on various learning experiences (rotations, longitudinal experiences, presentations, etc.) throughout the year. The ASHP Residency Learning System and PharmAcademic is used extensively, which offers the resident a tailored, personalized, and progressive learning experience throughout the year. This residency will tentatively begin on July 1, 2021 with one residency position available. PGY2 specialty residencies require the successful completion of a PGY1 residency year and pharmacy licensure in the state of Tennessee. VUMC pharmacy residency positions beginning in 2021 in postgraduate year one (PGY1) or postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency programs are offered to applicants through the ASHP Resident Matching Program (the "Match"). The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) is responsible for establishing the Rules of the Match, and for monitoring the implementation of the Match. The administration and conduct of the Match is carried out by National Matching Services Inc. on behalf of ASHP. Expected Start Date : July 1, 2021 Key Responsibilities: A broad range of experiences are incorporated into the residency curriculum. Didactic discussions, reading assignments, case presentations, written assignments, or direct patient care experiences will allow the pharmacy informatics resident to understand and appreciate the implications of areas including but not limited to understanding the role of informatics in improving patient safety, evaluate technology integration in clinical practice, assess the impact of informatics systems on clinician workflow, and participate in project design and implementation. Residents will develop expertise in informatics principals during the course of the residency year. Residents will have the opportunity to gain teaching experience and assist preceptors with teaching pharmacy students from the local colleges of pharmacy and PGY1 Pharmacy residents from our own institution, with an optional teaching certificate provided by one of the two local colleges of pharmacy obtained during the residency. The resident will also have opportunities to provide didactic lectures to pharmacy students, as well as in-service presentations to pharmacy and nursing staff. The resident will gain experience in giving formal presentations and will be required to complete research pharmacy projects with at least one process improvement project and manuscript submitted for publication during the residency. Required rotation experiences include Clinical Pharmacy Systems, Technical Concepts, Data Analytics, Medication Safety, Informatics Clinical, Clinical Decision Support I, Ambulatory, and Orientation, with a variety of required longitudinal experiences and elective rotations such as Clinical Decision Support II, Ambulatory II, Beacon, and others. Staffing requirements will vary but will primarily be focused on clinical pharmacy practice such as order entry, sterile products/IV Room, and staffing as needed in pharmacy throughout the year.
