This Associate Medical Director position for Occupational Health Care Quality requires being forward thinking and innovative in public health policy development, program leadership, and in applying clinical expertise to ensure high quality health care is provided for our workers.

Labor and Industries is the third largest public payor of health care in Washington State. The Office of the Medical Director (OMD) is responsible for ensuring that the care and treatment provided to workers for occupational injuries and diseases is of high quality, meaning it is appropriate, timely, safe, effective, and cost-effective. OMD accomplishes this through four core functions:
a) Providing direct clinical consultation related to claims; b) Providing professional education to health care providers and other stakeholders; c) Formulating and implementing L&I's health care policies and guidelines; and d) Conducting health care research to identify best health care practices.

Some of what you will do
Provide oversight and quality assurance of the Independent Medical Exam program and application of disability ratings;
Direct clinical consultation and problem solving with Insurance Services and Legal Services staff related to the medical management of complex claims;
Offer clinical guidance and consultation for development of evidence based policies, coverage decisions, and clinical practice guidelines, and assist communication strategies to facilitate their adoption by L&I staff and providers;
Oversee the quality of our external Clinical Consultant Program related to the medical management of complex claims.
Engage with clinical and business/labor advisory committees, and with public-private and interagency groups to address statewide issues to help increase health care quality (safety and effectiveness) and reduce unnecessary cost.
Your success will be measured by your interest and ability to:
Work collaboratively with individuals and groups who have diverse interests, needs, and abilities (e.g. nurses, physicians, attorneys, business and labor leaders, claim examiners, data analysts, researchers, members of the public).
Define and measure quality of care, identify gaps in quality of care, and propose ways to close the gaps so workers can heal and return to work.
Synthesize multiple sources of information and contribute to development of policies and guidelines that make a difference in clinical care and outcomes.
Lead and educate nurses and physicians in the application of best practices for clinical care and administrative simplicity.
Understand and work comfortably in a multidimensional environment, e.g... Medical, legal, political, economic, adjudicative, and innovative.

Valid State of Washington Medical License and Driver's License
3 years' experience in medical, occupational health, or quality improvement leadership in an institution or organization
Demonstrated strong abilities in effective problem solving, decision making, and organizational skills
Ability to work effectively with individuals and groups (e.g. staff, the public, associations, and other agencies) who have diverse backgrounds and interests
Actively and effectively manage projects to successful completion
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a public service orientation; keeps others informed and actively prevents or resolves conflict
Demonstrated leadership in creating an environment of collaboration and cooperation that generates potential and real opportunities for success
Treats everyone with respect and courtesy; actively seeks feedback; listens to and takes time to understand others' needs and concerns. Takes appropriate risks and challenges, including when to compromise and when to take a stand; and actively seeks new ideas and opportunities to support the agency's mission and goals to improve health outcomes and prevent disability for injured workers
Board certification in Occupational Medicine or related field, with at least 3 years' experience in the field
A Master's degree in Public Health or related public health field (epidemiology, health administration, health services research)
