This position serves as aPhysician Assistant forAnesthesiology Service at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Healthcare System (SLVHCS).The Physician Assistant is authorized to perform routine duties on a regular, repetitive basis. These duties may be performed without specific prior discussion with the supervising physician.
Duties may include but are not necessarily limited to the following:
Perform anesthesia-focused histories and physical examinations on inpatients and outpatients.
Provide and coordinate medical care for assigned patients in any care setting, including establishing diagnoses, formulating and implementing care plans and providing follow-up care.
Evaluate patients to determine need for further healthcare, and/or admissions.
Order diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, x-rays, electrocardiograms.
Order laboratory, diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, x-rays, electrocardiograms.
Order laboratory, diagnostic studies, and other special tests, such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computerized Tomography (CT) scans, Nuclear Medicine Studies, etc.
Carry out health promotion, disease prevention, and patient education activities.
Order ancillary services, such as pharmacy, social services, physical medicine, rehabilitation therapies, and prosthetic services, etc.
Draw blood specimens for testing and performing other comparable laboratory procedures, as needed.
Order VA specialty service consults and initiate requests for non-VA medical care and consults in accordance with VHA and medical center policies and procedures.
Make daily rounds to observe and record patient's medical progress, update and summarize medical records, change orders when appropriate, and notify the responsible physician of significant changes in the patient's condition.
Make interim summaries in the patient's medical record.
Dictate notes on procedures performed for which the Physician Assistant is responsible.
Order patient care supplies.
Provide education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions and use of prescribed treatments and drugs.
Write orders for or prescribe medications.
Administer IM, SQ, IV and PO medications.
The Physician Assistant may also provide care in non-traditional health care settings, such as telehealth, secure messaging, and e-consults.

This is a Non Bargaining Unit Position
In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following:
Must be a citizen of the United States.
Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
A bachelor's degree from a PA training program which is certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA); or graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a bachelor's degree in a health care occupation or a health-related science; or graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a period of progressively responsible health care experience such as an independent duty medical corpsman, licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, medical technologist, or medical technician. The duration of approved academic training and health care experience must total at least 5 years.
Must have a current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants (NCCPA).
Qualifications include current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration from a state that authorizes Physician Assistants to prescribe controlled substances and personal DEA registration is highly desirable.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organization (e.g., professional, philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements: A pre-placement physical examination will be completed prior to appointment to determine the physical and mental fitness of candidates. The examination will be concerned with the mental and physical ability of the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment and will include requisite laboratory and other screening as required by Federal regulatory agencies. Physician applicants must have the mental and physical ability to perform core privileges required by the specialty position in addition to any specialty privileges requested.
